Character's background (their past and present):
What would it be like if you couldn't feel pain? Natsuo and his Sacrifice Youji were artificially created and then trained by Nagisa Sagan as the ultimate team. She believed that not being able to feel pain would mean the Zero teams would fight to abandon, never giving up. Having never been defeated herself, Nagisa viewed the Zero team as an extension of her own abilities. Natsuo and Youji are the second team in the Zero series, the first being an older female team, Yamato and Kouya. What makes the second series different from the first series is that Natsuo and Youji were created in a lab, not born. Yamato and Kouya were born naturally, but modified.
Nagisa's relationship with Natsuo is a troubled one. Nagisa, who you might call Natsuo's makeshift mother, blatantly prefers Youji(having created Youji in the image of her dead sister, this isn't really surprising). Natsuo is rather jealous of this relationship, feeling Nagisa is trying to create a bond that he can never have with Youji. Youji is his and his alone. He often brushes it off, saying that it's okay Nagisa prefers Youji—he prefers Youji too. And even though she prefers Youji, she still looks out for them and needs the Zeros. She often warns them about the temperature of hot beverages, or when to be careful. In short, she acts as their mother, albeit a very screwed up one.
Natsuo is the Fighter(Sentouki) of the 2nd generation Zero team, with Youji as his Sacrifice. At the start of the series, the two of them were sent to defeat Agatsuma Soubi, Loveless' sentouki. Despite not playing by the rules and shoving a nail through Soubi's hand, they lost. They both lost when Soubi lowered the ambient temperature and their bodies couldn't regulate their own heat exchange. Natsuo and Youji nearly did of frostbite.
Having lost, they were considered strays. It was made very clear by Nagisa-sensei that they were not to return if they lost.They would be abandoned and left to die. They lucked out, and the Zero boys got to share Soubi's apartment. After spending some time and living with Soubi and drinking beer with his friend Kio, Nagisa called them back(literally, on their cell phone), and commanded them to go back to the academy for schooling. They needed to get stronger. Being 'forced' to be schooled by Ritsu-sensei was not their idea of fun, having been trained all their life by Nagisa-sensei.
Shortly after their return, Seimei, Soubi's previous Sacrifice, returned. When Seimei attacked and gouged out Ritsu's eyes, the Zero's volunteered to help track down Seimei. Nagisa, hysterical by this point and terrified for her precious Zero's safety, proclaimed that they were too weak to fight, that they would die, and at the same time, that she didn't care at all about it. Going to fend off Seimei, they proclaimed to the rest of the academy that whatever happens from thereon in is all their fault. Confronting Seimei, Natsuo tried to control his name. Receiving conflicting orders from Nagisa and Ritsu about whether to just stop Seimei or kill him, Seimei is eventually driven from the building and they report back they they have succeeded. The two Zero boys eventually follow Soubi out of some misguided sense of loyalty(and in turn live with him), and transfer into Ritsuka's school.
Character's personality:
At first glance, Nastuo might seem sadistic and cruel, but his bond with Youji runs deep. Although the Zero series were created with the ability to change partner's, both the first and second generation Zero's are more than a pair, unwilling to be separated and interchanged. Natsuo and Youji are almost as inseparable as two people can be, even to the point of loosing their individuality. The two simply don't know how to exist without each other.
Like his Sacrifice Youji, Natsuo is rather interested in pain. He's interested in what it feels like, what causes it, every aspect of pain fascinates him because he has no idea what it is like. He tries to cause as much physical pain to others as possible, observing their reactions and trying to infer from them what pain might be like. They have no way to feel it and the inability to know what it feels like is an endless fascination, even to the point of hurting others or themselves in their quest to know pain.
They both act rather spoiled at the beginning of the series, mainly because they haven't lost. In their view, they are the strongest, and being only 12 doesn't matter. When Natsuo(or Youji) want something, they expect it to be given to them. They are rather blatant and outspoken in their desires and wishes. Very bratty, in their minds, anyone who falls for a trick, looses a fight, gets hurt or dies because of it deserves it because they fell for it. They have no respect for adults(or children for that matter) and typically say whatever is on their minds. Natsuo and Youji also have a very vulgar vocabulary.
Natsuo, while he can be mean, rude, full of pride and twisted, can also be very nice when he wants to be. Natsuo is a little nicer than Youji. Even though they start out as rivals and enemies, Natsuo and Youji consider themselves friends of Soubi, Ritsuka and even Kio. The same cannot be said for Seimei.
Natsuo's solution to problems is usually a violent one and only goes to show how little experience he has had with actual love and caring, or real-life experience outside the academy. Before Soubi kindly adopted the little brats, no one has actually offered to let them stay in their house before. It was the first kindness they had been shown, and as a result are rather bitter. Natsuo doesn't believe in justice or fairness, life is intrinsically sucky. When Natsuo learns that Ritsuka's mother is abusing him, his reaction is that he should just fight back, or that his mother should just abandon him instead. He can't understand stressful situations and believes that his mother should just 'suck it up', because she knew what she was getting into in the first place by having children. He's actually excited to learn that Nagisa's treatment of them constitutes child abuse and neglect. Natsuo and Youji believe that they are strong because they are together, but without each other, such strength would be impossible.
Natsuo likes cutting things up and playing with knives. If he's lucky enough not to be causing any harm, he's can be quite crafty.
In respect to his Sacrifice, Youji, Natsuo will do what Youji commands, in battle or outside of battle. If Youji tells him to get the phone, he will. Their relationship is different than Soubi and Seimei's, which is one of absolute command. Natsuo and Youji are more interwoven, and each know how their place as a Sacrifice or Fighter Unit/Sentouki. However, just because Natsuo obeys Youji's orders, does not mean he will obey anyone elses. In fact, he is most likely to not obey anyone's orders but Youji.
With Youji not currently being on the Enterprise, Natsuo will start to have to think for himself. It's not that he's incapable of thinking for himself. It's just that as a Sentouki, a fighter, he's used to (and has been trained to) follow his Sacrifice's orders and will. He'll probably be rather bratty, and probably put the doctors through hell with a little mutilation('playing' with others or himself). He'll latch on to Soubi, as his current makeshift guardian. In addition, he'll probably latch on to any sort of parental or friend figures he comes across.
Natsuo's also an A+ student. He whole-heartedly believes that anything less is pure laziness. This stems from his upbringing. Nagisa did not tolerate failure or anything less than perfection. After the two transfer to Ritsuka's school, they even humiliate the entire class after they were the only ones to get perfect scores on a test.
Character's skills/abilities/powers:
Magical Powers: Natsuo is the Sentouki or Fighter of the male Zero Unit. Natsuo has the power to fight battles in the Loveless Universe by using words/poetry to create spells and magical effects. The strength and clarity of the Sentouki's words and visualization of the words give the spell more power. Being with or close to his Sacrifice, Youji, he can speed up healing for the damage his Sacrifice has taken during battle. However, being separated from his Sacrifice, his power is halved(and Natsuo is unlikely to start anything without Youji, quite unlike Soubi).
Zero have the ability to hypnotize and take possession of a person if they know their full name, controlling their actions.
Genetic: Natsuo is the Sentouki or Fighter of the Zero unit. Like all Zero's, he is made to be interchangeable with another Zero Fighter. Not that he will go willingly. Natsuo and Youji are always together. While the female Zero team were genetically modified to make them physically incapable of feeling pain, the boy Zero's were genetically/artificially created. Their ability to not feel pain is not a power, but genetic. Their nerves simply do not function, in our world, this is called CIPA(Congential insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis), a rare genetic disorder of the nervous system. Anhidrosis, or the inability to sweat, can cause grave danger. This makes them susceptible to changes in temperature, extreme heat or cold can cause death. Because they are unable to sweat or shiver, they are unable to regulate their own internal temperature and stop it from rising or falling. In the loveless manga, this lack of pain is explained to be due to Nagisa creating them without pain receptors. They also cannot feel drunk, and have been known to pass out due to alcohol toxicity.
As he can't feel pain, Natsuo does things that no one who feels pain would ever do, such as leaving a thumb inside a cup of scalding hot coffee( or you know, poking their own eye out due to curiosity). Their lack of pain is a danger to themselves as well as others. A bored Zero is a dangerous Zero.
